Peer Recovery Specialists (PRS)

Family Support Partners—Adult (FSP-A)

Peer Recovery Specialists-Young Adult (PRS-YA)

Individuals new to Peer Support who want to become certified to do this work

As we attain grant funding or other donations, our list of programs will open up and expand. You can check out our active or planned programs in the list below.

We can train and credential the following Peer Support designations working with adult populations: 

Peer Support Training Programs

Peer Recovery Specialist Training

Offered by a season Peer Support subject matter expert. Learn the basics and get thorough and comprehensive training to prepare you to be a Peer Recovery Specialist. This is the first step of training required in Virginia to become a certified Peer Recovery Specialist.

Details:

  • $500/per person

  • Available twice per year

  • Virtual

    • 60 hours of instructing time (6-hour days for 10 days), 12 hours of homework - 72 total hours.

    • Learn in a group setting of 6 to 14 students.

Ethics Training

We work through a very hands-on method to help providers walk away with very tangible tools to address ethical dilemmas. Learn in a group setting of up to 35 students.

  • $75 per person

  • Available quarterly

  • 6 hours, virtual

  • Required for Peer Recovery Specialist recertification every 2 years

Documentation Training

Review Peer Support vocabulary and documentation strategies. Train on how to capture the progress and ongoing needs of the individual you are supporting, while maintaining their confidentiality. Bring greater visibility, accountability, and credibility to your role in this work and learn how to document required details based on the program you’re working within.
 

NOTE: This is not an official medicaid billing documentation training.
 

Details:

  • $50 per person

  • Available quarterly

  • 2 hours, virtual

Group rates are available for Community Service Boards or other entities that want additional training or consulting for their Peer Support Providers. 

One-off Trainings for Peer Supporters and other Support Professionals

Upon request, VAPS can help coordinate and deliver training and talks to any professional working with individuals on a recovery journey or experiencing mental health challenges. 

Topics include:

  • Boundaries 

  • Ethics

  • Engagement

  • Communication skills (individual, family, friends, systems, partners)

  • Maintaining your healing and recovery as a Peer Supporter

  • Understanding peer support

  • Collaboration skills
